HeroesCon a Buzz of Activity this Weekend!

Charlotte, NC-- The Hornets Nest is going to be buzzing this weekend, as HeroesCon Charlotte starts off with a bang on Friday and continues through Sunday, as fans swarm around for one of the best comic book and comic art shows in the nation.

Several highlights for the weekend include panels that take a look at the "Art of Nick Cardy," on Friday at 2:00. "The Art of Michael Golden" on Friday at 1:30, and a war comics panel on Saturday, featuring both Michael Golden ("The 'Nam) and Nick Cardy and others, which will also focus on the new Cardy book from Eva Ink Publishing.

This much anticipated new book, "Nick Cardy: The Artist at War," recreates Nick's sketchbooks from his time in World War II, and shares his life in the war through his art. This will be the official debut for the autobiographical tome. And the book will be available at the show in both sketch and autographed versions. Came by and see either Nick Cardy or Renee Witterstaetter (Eva Ink) at their tables to get your copy.

Amazing painter, Mark Texeira, will also be at the show. Known for his stunning work on "Ghost Rider," "Black Panther," "MoonKnihgt," and much more, Texeira will soon be featured in two new Punisher mini-series from Marvel Comics. Mark will be sketching and signing all days of the convention.

Writer and color artist, Renee Witterstaetter, in addition to having copies of her new book "Nick Cardy: The Artist at War," at her table, will also be offering new books "Michael Golden: More Heroes and Villains," "Joe Jusko: Savage Beauty," and the new children's book "Kerry and the Scary Things."

Other wonderful talent joining the show include: Rodney Ramos, Adam Hughes, Craig Hamilton, and way too many to mention here!

Nicknamed "The Hornets Nest," by General Cornwallis in the Revolutionary War, after being driven out by hostile residents, the strength and force of will that made Charlotte that "nest of rebellion" then, is still strong in this amazing city. And we're happy that their reception of comics and comic fans is much more warm than what the good ol' General received...

Come see what makes this show….and this city.. so spectacular.

A Word About the HeroesCon Art Auction-- This Weekend!

Hi Ya'll-- I'm gonna throw my two cents out there to put in a word about the upcoming HeroesCon, run by our friend Shelton Drum. Shelton also owns one of the best comic shops we've ever been in, Heroes Aren't Hard to Find, in Charlotte as well.

This is certainly one of our favorite shows, and fate willing, we never miss it. This year, I'll be there with Michael Golden and Mark Texeira. Other friends of ours will be in attendance as well! Yeah! And I have to say, it's one of the most purely comic and comic art shows still alive today.

To help this great show's bottom line, many of the artists in attendance donate art to the con's auction. These funds go to helping bring the creators you want to see, back every year.

As a result, you art collectors out there can snag some incredible deals on one of a kind pieces. I know that both Golden and Texeira will be contributing this year. I'll also put some of my new books in the auction as well.

While I'm at it, let me mention that I'll also be debuting my new book "Nick Cardy: The Artist at War," at this convention, and Nick Cardy himself will be in attendance! There is also a panel scheduled on Friday night to talk about Nick and his careeer. More on that in my next press release.

In the meantime, below is Allison Sohn's shout out to all you artistic types. And for you collector's out there, this event is not to be missed!

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM ALLISON SOHN

Dear Friends, Fellow Artists, and Legends!

…and Yes, I said Legends. You know who you are. But just in case you don't know who I am, I'll take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Allison Sohn and I have run the HeroesCon art auction on behalf of Shelton Drum for the last few years. Many of you may know me better as Adam Hughes' wife, or that bossy redhead that runs Adam's table at conventions.

I'm dropping you this email today regarding the upcoming HeroesCon art auction. Many of you have attended before, so you know the drill. However, for some of you, this may be your first time attending HeroesCon -- or maybe it's just your first time in 10 years. Either way, I thought it would be helpful to everyone if I sent out this letter.

The HeroesCon art auction is held on Saturday night, in one of the Westin's ballrooms. Last year the auctions as attended by approximately 800 people. It has become a must-see event for fans and professionals alike, and the biggest party of the show! But it wouldn't happen if not for the donations of artists like us. I'm emailing today to ask those that may not know, and remind those that do, for a donation of a piece of original artwork for our auction. Donations can be done from home, done at your table while fans admire your work, or done on one of the several stages HeroesCon will have set up for artists to work on. There will be an assortment of art supplies on hand for everyone to use, or you can bring your own. You can see photos of many of the guests painting on stage, as well as pictures of last year's auction in HeroesOnline's own flickr account, found here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/heroesonline/sets/72157624353553765/

Many people ask what the auction's proceeds benefit. The short answer is "Us". The proceeds from the auction help to pay for invitedartists’ travel and accommodations for the event, while allowing HeroesCon to keep their ticket prices some of the lowest on the convention circuit. Art donations frequently transform an “attending professional” to an “invited guest.” The more money raised in the auction, the bigger the budget is for next year’s show. For those that weren't aware, a three day pass for the show is only $30, and children under the age of 12 get in for free. Prices this affordable allow whole families to attend the show, bringing in a new generation of fans along with the old one. And its all possible due to the donations of original artworks by the attending artists for the art auction.

The art auction has 2 different aspects to it: a Saturday night live auction an all-day Sunday silent auction. I, with the help of a handful of HeroesCon staffers, divide the art donations into the two groups. The truth of that matter is, we get so many donations it is impossible to include everything in the Saturday night event. We will often choose smaller sized pieces that might be difficult to see at the live auction, donated prints, and art that arrives too late for Saturday night's event for the Sunday afternoon one. We will also save several of what we'd call the "premium" pieces for Sunday, so that fans are drawn to the silent auction as much as they are the live one. Either way, a piece of art in the auction serves as a nice promo for the contributing artists and sometimes, especially with really dynamic pieces, brings fans and pros alike to your artist alley table to buy commissions.

I think that about covers it; what the HeroesCon art auction is, and what you can do to help make it a success. I look forward to seeing you all in Charlotte in a few short weeks, and to personally auctioning off your donations!

See y’all soon!
Allison

Now Up: Michael Golden Wizard Miami Interview!

While at Wizard Miami, Michael Golden did this comprehensive interview, now available for listening online. Thanks to Steve for the great questions. This is one of the best interviews I've heard in awhile. :-) If you are a fan of Micronauts, ExoSquad or Jurassic Park, or heck, Michael Golden, give it a gander. It's full o'comic book history.

Here's what the interviewer has to say:

"IT'S THE 25TH PODCASTALYPSE! And it's more exciting than being on an airplane flown by a velociraptor without a pilot's license because Michael Golden's here and he's got some stories to tell. It's a Prometheus Pit full of fun as the King of the Acroyears recounts what it's like being a respected superhero artist while also being known as that guy who worked on all those licensed toy books. It's one of the most experienced storytellers of our time discussing the difference between art and craft and what happens when commercialism usurps artistic integrity. Are the Star Wars prequels as bad as the critics say? Was Star Wars #38 about being obsessed with Star Wars? And what REALLY happened to those Micronaut and GI Joe action figure "production samples" they gave him? Find out all that and more in this "I KEPT THE JET!" edition of the podcastalypse!

Humongous thanks to Michael Golden for allowing me this interview during WizardWorld Miami 2011 and making my 25th episode something really special. Definitely go check out his panels on storytelling during the WizardWorld Convention Tour-the one in Miami was a highlight of the show for me. You can keep up with Michael at his Facebook page and stay on top of his upcoming convention appearances at EvaInkArtistGroup.com. His next convention is Wizard World Toronto March 18-20th then it's back to Florida for MegaCon March 25-27th!"

Renee's Wizard Miami Interview-- Now Online

Hi Kids-- While I was at the wonderful Wizard Miami last week, I met a gentleman at the show who has a pretty cool blog pertaining to everything robotic. Micronauts, Rom, ExoSquad, you name it.

I was the editor of the short-lived ExoSquad at Topps Comics, which produced some fantastic Michael Golden covers--two of which were sadly never printed-- as a comic cover anyway.

But, nostalgia reigns supreme, and apparently, this comic has a cult following! Who knew!

Here's the interview from February 27, 2011. In Miami, Florida:

http://pleasesavemerobots.blogspot.com/2011/03/of-heroes-villains-dinosaurs-exosuits.html

My part of the interview begins around the 16 minute mark after the interviewer, Steve De Anda, does his intro.

If you are into all things robotic, this may be of interest to you. I also talk about other things. :-) As Steve says:

"The 24th seal of the Roboplastic Apocalypse is pulverized instantly like a Tyrannosaurus getting kicked in the face by Jackie Chan when special guest Renee Witterstaetter demolishes the Kingdom Roboplastico! Join me my fellow Macrocranians as I talk to this prolific writer, author, colorist and editor about her career spanning multiple artistic disciplines and numerous roles within and beyond the comic book industry. Thrill to stories from behind the scenes at Topps Comics during the production of the ill-fated ExoSquad book and other fascinating tales like why the powers that be at Marvel weren't interested in doing a Jurassic Park movie adaptation. It's all here and more in this THE ONLY CELEBRATION OF EXOSQUAD'S 18TH ANNIVERSARY WE'RE GONNA GET edition of the Podcastalypse!"

Thanks to Steve for the great conversation!

Miami-Fl-- Oh, baby, it's cold outside in some parts of the country.... but NOT in Miami. What better place to be than at a Wizard World show this weekend in the sunshine state?

Laisse les bon temps rouler! Michael Golden Art Part of VIP Pack for Wizard New Orleans!

I am particularly looking forward to Wizard World New Orleans in a few weeks, returning to a city that meant so much to me when I was growing up. Each summer, my family made the 8 hour trek from Texarkana to NOLA, to spend a few weeks with my Father's sister, Aunt Margaret. She was as big as life and the best Cajun cook ever, and I loved her dearly. It's been some years now since I've been in NO. I think the last time was for the World Sci-Fi convention several decades past.Far too long, and the hankering for cafe au lait and beignets, gumbo, red beans and rice, po-boys...yum... is getting too hard to resist! :-)

Hope some of you will come down and join in the celebration for the first ever Wizard New Orleans. New Orleans is one of the most unique cities and the United States, and if you haven't been there, you don't know what you are missing!

Michael Golden Print Part of VIP Pack: Limited to 1,000 Copies!

New Orleans--The Paris of the South, The Big Easy, The Crescent City! Vampire Central! --New Orleans is known by many names... so let's add host city of Louisiana's biggest comic-con to 'em, as Wizard New Orleans makes a riotous debut in just a few weeks!

To make the event even more festive, renowned artist Michael Golden has been tapped by the folks at Wizard World to provide a limited VIP print for attendees at the show! Limited to 1,000 copies!

Michael first broke onto the comic scene working on such DC Comics titles as Mister Miracle and Batman Family. In 1978, he made a splash with his work on The Micronauts. He drew a number of Marvel series throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Doctor Strange, She-Hulk, the Howard the Duck black-and-white comics magazine, and the highly lauded, The 'Nam, as well as G.I. Joe, ROM, Nomad, and The Saga of Crystar, Vigilante, Wonder Woman and far too much to mention here!

As a artist/writer/creator Michael Golden, is co-creator of the X-men's Rogue character, Spartan X and Bucky O'Hare" and is known worldwide for his groundbreaking story work, and is counted as one of the best cover designers and storytellers in the business.

"....unless you can actually draw yourself, it is very difficult to understand the exact mind-blowing impossibility of what he does," said writer/artist Larry Hama, of Golden's work.

"Michael blithely puts down on paper exactly what he sees in his head. It's like he's got a cosmic opaque projector that shoots a laser beam from his brain through the kundalini eye in his forehead straight down onto the drawing surface where all he has to do is trace it," continues Hama. "The result is hard-edged and fully realized in every way. No fuzzy impressions here. No using the side of the pencil. No squiggly space-filling lines blocked in on automatic pilot. To paraphrase Neal Adams (who was referring to Golden), there is not a single millimeter of line on the page that is not directed by conscious thought."

Recent books covering the colorful life and amazing art of Michael Golden include a Manga version of the "Bucky O'Hare" series, created with Hama, as well as the top selling art retrospective "Excess: The Art of Michael Golden," written by Renee Witterstaetter, which sold out and has gone into a second printing, as well as his recent sketchbook "Heroes and Villains," and the just released NEW sketchbook, "MORE Heroes and Villains." Golden to Conduct FREE Storytelling Class at Wizard Atlanta!

Golden and Scott There to Make Your Holiday Shopping Easier!
:-)

Atlanta, GA-- Get out of the crowded malls with folks fighting over sweaters people are going to return anyway, and come to Wizard World Atlanta for some not-so-last minute Holiday shopping, ya'll. And while you are there, drop into Saturday's "Storytelling with Michael Golden," and hear some tips-- both for story and for art--from one of the best in the business.

Wizard World Atlanta is taking place December 4th and 5th at the Cobb Galleria Centre, 10-6 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday.

Headlining the guest list is artist Michael Golden, known for his stellar storytelling work in the comics industry on such books as "G.I Joe," "The Nam," "Micronauts," "Batman Family," "Avengers," and far too many to name here. Golden is also the co-creator of numerous characters including Rogue (of the X-Men), Bucky O' Hare, and Spartan X to name a few. Golden's work will shortly be seen on projects that include "Spawn 200," "Two Worlds," and a short story featuring the Rocketeer. Upcoming covers include work on the new graphic novel "Serial," as well as the cover of the children's book, "Kerry and the Scary Things."

Michael will be at Wizard Atlanta both days of the show, and will have prints and new books available for holiday shopping. Get one signed for that special person on your list! He'll also be doing a limited number of sketches at the show.

My hats off to UMES for such a respectful and classy gallery show, showcasing Michael's career and presenting over 45 rare pieces of artwork for display.

Michael Golden Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Maryland

Salisbury, MD-- Artist Michael Golden has just been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and it's certainly no wonder.

Artist/writer/creator Michael Golden, co-creator of the X-men's Rogue character, "Spartan X" and Bucky O'Hare, is known worldwide for his groundbreaking work on "The 'Nam," "Micronauts,"  "G.I. Joe Yearbook," and  "Dr. Strange, " among MUCH more, and is counted as one of the best cover designers and storytellers in the sequential art business.

Currently, Golden's work can be seen with recent covers for "Nightwing", "Iron Man", "Wonder Woman," "Heroes for Hire", "Exiles," "Demon's Regret," "Spiderman," "Hulk," "Mice Templar," "Serial," as well as numerous other titles, for about every company out there ... including a few secret projects for IDW, DC and Image.

In short, Michael Golden has been one of the most influential creators around for the last several decades:

Recent books covering the colorful life and amazing art of Michael Golden include a Manga version of the "Bucky O'Hare" series, created with Hama, as well as the top selling art retrospective "Excess: The Art of Michael Golden," written by Renee Witterstaetter, which sold out and has gone into a second printing, as well as his recent sketchbook "Heroes and Villains," and the just released NEW sketchbook, "MORE Heroes and Villains."

As a conceptual cover artist, Michael has penciled everything from Batman and Captain America to Vampirella!  And the list keeps growing. Mr. Golden has served as an Editor at DC Comics as well as Senior Art Director at Marvel Comics, and has worked on scores of movie production projects, some currently in development.

His art has been the focus of gallery shows in places as diverse as Gijon, Barcelona, New York, Antwerp and Brussels, while his class on storytelling has been conducted from Spain to Brussels to France to Canada to the United States... and most recently China.

It's planned for his extensive 1-2 day storytelling class to launch shortly, as Michael shares more of his philosophy of art and what he considers to be the Golden Rules of storytelling. This course will be conducted as 2 day workshops at key points throughout the United States.

In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Maryland, a month long retrospective of Mr. Golden's work, featuring over 45 pieces of rare original art, is currently running the UMES renowned Mosely Gallery.

This marks Mr. Golden's second Lifetime Achievement Award, joining an award from the Lille Comics Festival in 2009.

Golden Fantasy Artworks on Display-- A Review

New Article about the Mosley Gallery show. I like it that they focus on the Exosquad piece. I was the editor on the series and hired Golden to do the covers. --R.

Comic Book Artist Exhibits Fantasy Artworks at Mosely Gallery.
Focus: Exosquad #1

The exhibition of Michael Golden's comic book art, on view through Dec. 2 at the Mosely Gallery, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, raises important questions about audience, gender and the relationship of images to texts.

Specifically, these images were created as integral parts of stories in comic books or graphic novels, whose readers are primarily male. As such, can they hold the attention of female viewers or viewers who have little knowledge or interest in what Golden has termed "science-fiction/fantasy-adventure"?

Somewhat to my surprise, the answer is "yes." I was struck by the extraordinary skill and expressiveness of these images, despite the fact that I know very little about the characters or narratives depicted in them.

The exhibition has about 40 works, primarily original drawings in black and white for pages and covers of comic books and graphic novels. A few paintings for comic book covers or yearbooks are also on display.

Two works for the cover of "ExoSquad #1" show Golden's working process. One is a brush and ink drawing and the other, a 'blue line' painting. To make the drawing, Golden initially "penciled" or drew the scene. He then laid a sheet of clear acetate over the pencil drawing, tracing its outlines and linear details onto the acetate in black ink with a brush. After that, he "colored" or painted the pencil drawing. He then laid a copy of the acetate line drawing, now in blue, over the painted drawing, creating a composite image. The final image, fusing line with color, thus exists only as a composite.

Golden's approach to making these images reflects, in part, the process used to reproduce them, in which the lines and colors are printed separately. What is unusual, however, is the extent of his involvement, performing tasks -- penciling, inking and coloring -- that are generally done by different people.

The end result is a crisp, clear, minutely detailed image, full of dramatic action, that sums up the key characters and storyline (based on a television series of the early 1990s) of interstellar war between humans (Terrans) and Neosapiens, an artificial race of slaves created by the Terrans who then revolted against them.

Other fantasy-adventure works in the show depict Superman, the Micronauts, Spartan X, Bucky O'Hare and Jurassic Park. Golden's brush and ink drawing for the cover of "Jurassic Park Returns #4" shows his incredible skill in creating a wide-range of illusionistic effects, such as the detailed representation of the immense, open-jawed Tyrannosaurus whose shadow is about to swallow the terrified couple at the right.

The show also includes cover art from Golden's "The 'NAM" series, which deals with the experiences of ordinary soldiers in Vietnam. The example on display shows soldiers leaving hostile terrain by helicopter. Other works in the series depict their interactions with fellow soldiers, the Vietnamese, or civilians in the United States upon their return home.
